Structure of the Fellowship Program
Program sessions use the Zoom platform to bring together faculty and fellows across a wide geographic area allowing fellows to learn from one another while eliminating the need for travel.
We use a case-based discussion format and the fellows are encouraged to bring complex cases and expected to identify and discuss the bio pyschosocial factors contributing to that case.This broadens the knowledge and understanding of the fellows beyond their individual experiences.
The coronavirus pandemic has placed further emphasis on the importance of effective remote learning and engagement - the fellowship has been both a source of learning and of support during these challenging times.
In the last COVID surge, the group quickly transitioned to discuss relevant concerns and also to act as a network of support in challenging times. We ensured to remain a resource and system of support to priortise the mental health and well-being of our fellows and faculty.
Apart from these clinical skills, the certificate program aims to provide significant training in leadership, advocacy, research and community engagement. Examples of concepts that are highlighted throughout the program include community needs assessments, quality improvement, empathetic and patient-centered care, rational drug use and community wellness.
Fellows are also expected to complete a quality improvement project for their PHC, perform quarterly self-evaluations and lead sessions on pertinent topics of their choosing. The faculty provide mentorship and share tools and resources that may be beneficial to. Faculty also facilitate discussions, journal clubs, and foster peer support.
Hands-on/ Immersive training
The program has also developed partnerships with local institutions to provide hands-on training such as procedural workshops throughout the year.
