Though India graduates approximately 50,000 medical doctors (MBBS) every year, only a small fraction goes into primary care due to the lack of advanced training, mentorship and infrastructure to support a robust primary care system.

Some MBBS doctors become employed at government-run PHCs (Primary Health Centers) which serve marginalised rural and urban communities. Most of these physicians do not have the financial means to access learning opportunities or mentorship.

Our community partners have identified that these medical officers have not had adequate training in providing high quality comprehensive primary care to meet the needs of their communities. In response to this need and in partnership with AFPI, karuna Trust and other valued organisations we developed a program to provide further training to medicial officers to strengthen the future physician leaders in Family Medicine throughout India.
